Hypothyroidism
A condition of low thyroid level, which can lead to low metabolism and low energy level. Overtime if not treated, other health problems include obesity, joint pain, and heart disease.
Risk factors
More common in older women. Factors include family history of thyroid disease, autoimmune diseases such a type 1 diabetes or celiac disease, previously being treated with radioactive iodine or anti-thyroid medications, received radiation to neck or upper chest or had thyroid surgery.
Symptoms
Fatigue and weight gain, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, dry skin, puffy face, hoarseness, muscle aches and weakness, elevated blood cholesterol level, thinning hair, depression, impaired memory, enlarged thyroid gland.
Treatments
Treatment of hyperthyroidism may include antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine-131 or in rare cases, thyroid surgery.
